The owner of a 1.4 million yuan (US$190,000) Range Rover in China who sought compensation in the form of just 15 egg pancakes after a breakfast cart accidentally scratched his car has earned widespread praise on mainland social media.

The owner, surnamed Yang, from Shenyang, Liaoning province in northeastern China, said that his vehicle was recently scratched when a breakfast cart operated by a couple reversed into it.

“The cart was driven by the wife. She probably misjudged the distance and scraped my car,” Yang told the Yangtse Evening Post.

“She did not recognise what kind of car it was, and just called her husband over.”

After the incident, Yang contacted the car showroom and discovered that the repairs would cost about 3,000 yuan (US$410).

However, the male owner of the cart, surnamed Jiang, said they could not afford the repair costs.

“I later learned that the couple were in their 50s, supporting both their elderly parents and young children. The cost was a big burden for them,” the car owner said.

“They run a small business and work very hard. The husband asked if there was another way they could compensate me. So I said, just give me some egg pancakes!” he added.

“Jiang then said, ‘From now on, you and your friends can eat egg pancakes here for free, eat as much as you want!’ But I did not want to take advantage of them, so I suggested a limit, just 15 egg pancakes,” Yang said.

Egg-filled pancakes are a popular street food and breakfast favourite in China, filled with eggs, bacon, chicken breasts, potatoes, and vegetables. They usually cost less than 10 yuan (US$1.4).

An online video shows Jiang feeling embarrassed by the generous offer.
He insisted on transferring 99 yuan to Yang and repeatedly thanked him.
Jiang told the Xiaoxiang Morning Herald that he and his wife had been selling breakfast in this area for seven years and had never met Yang before.

“Luckily, we ran into a good person,” Jiang said.

The car owner has been widely praised on mainland social media.

One person said: “He is so generous! That is what life is all about, having a big vision. Thumbs up!”

While another said: “The car owner is truly admirable! And the breakfast cart owner is lucky to have met someone so kind!”
