Mild hybrid: The Swift Hybrid uses a 12-volt mechanical device called an Integrated Starter Generator (ISG) to assist the petrol engine. The ISG is powered by a battery that charges when the car decelerates and brakes. The ISG helps with functions like starting the car, filling torque between gear changes, and turning off the petrol engine when the car stops.

The Suzuki Swift Hybrid is covered by a five-year/unlimited-kilometre warranty, as with the rest of the Suzuki range.

Suzuki claims fuel consumption of 4.0 litres per 100 kilometres for the CVT automatic Swift – or 3.8L/100km for the base-model manual – with 95-octane, not 91-octane, premium petrol required.

It is down significantly from the 4.8L/100km auto and 4.6L/100km manual ratings of the previous 1.2-litre four-cylinder Swift – likely thanks to both the new three-cylinder engine, and a small benefit from the mild-hybrid system.

On paper it is the second-most fuel-efficient car in the city-car class, behind the Toyota Yaris Hybrid (3.3L/100km) –
