Millions of U.S. drivers may be entitled to a significant payout as part of a settlement between automakers Kia and Hyundai, potentially putting over $3,000 back in their pockets.
However, the deadline to file a claim is approaching fast.

Why it this compensation being offered?
The $145 million settlement was reached after owners and lessees of Kia and Hyundai vehicles filed complaints in multiple U.S. states.
The claims alleged that their vehicles lacked proper anti-theft features, making them easier targets for thieves.

While many other automakers introduced engine immobilizers to prevent unauthorized vehicle starts, Kia and Hyundai continued using traditional turn-key
ignition systems, which became a security risk.
This oversight became more concerning when a viral social media trend further exposed the vulnerability of these cars.

The TikTok Trend that fuelled car thefts
In late 2020, a TikTok trend known as “Kia Boys” emerged, where young users posted videos showing how to steal Kia and Hyundai vehicles using basic tools like screwdrivers.
This trend gained traction quickly and coincided with a nationwide rise in car thefts, drawing attention to the lack of advanced security systems in these models.

Who is eligible for the settlement?
Kia and Hyundai agreed to this payout while maintaining that they did not admit fault.
Their goal was to avoid lengthy legal battles and offer relief to affected customers.
Owners or lessees who experienced theft, damage, or total loss due to the security flaws may be eligible for a one-time payment of up to $3,375.

Free security upgrades for Kia and Hyundai owners
In an effort to address the issue, both Kia and Hyundai have launched programs to improve vehicle security free of charge.
They’ve set up temporary service locations where drivers can upgrade their vehicle software with new anti-theft features, a move that’s been well-received by many.
The deadline to submit an application for the payments is January 11, 2025.
