Man Buys a Genesis Sedan Listed With a "Bad Engine" for Half the Price, Fixes It for $80

A dealership took a 2017 Genesis G90 in on trade and then, decided to auction it off.

It was listed as having an oil pressure issue, suggesting that it needed a new engine.

Nobody even came near it. It just sat there week after week, waiting for someone to take it home.

Sam took a gamble, offered half of the initial price for the seven-year-old sedan, and soon had it shipped to his home.

He bought the car for $12,100 plus a $500 auction fee, which is less than half the price of any Genesis G90 of similar age and with similar mileage currently on the used car market.

The 2017 model, labeled as a budget luxury sedan, has clocked 65,085 miles (104,744 kilometers) in the seven years it spent on the road until its owner decided to trade it in.

It was a run-and-drive car, despite the listing indicating a low oil pressure issue.

One of the photos Sam saw in the sales ad showed the digital gauge cluster with the engine on, and there wasn't a single warning light on.

It must have been one of the reasons he decided to buy the car.

However, running an engine on low oil pressure can cause serious damage.

The first thing he checked on the Genesis G90 when he had it delivered was the engine oil. The level, texture, and color seemed fine, and the car seemed to drive perfectly.

But the dream came to an abrupt end the moment Sam stopped at the red light. The low oil pressure warning lit up on the dashboard.

But it disappeared when the car was on the move again and came back at the next stop. All signs led to a potential faulty sensor.

Sam googled the issue and found threads and threads of discussions on the topic.

It was something that the Genesis models had problems with sooner or later.

The Genesis G90 is powered by the twin-turbocharged engine that it shares with the Kia Stinger.

It is a 3.3-liter V6, which pumps out 365 horsepower and 376 pound-feet of torque in the GT version.

An eight-speed automatic transmission puts the power down in a rear-wheel drive setup. Those are enough for an acceleration from 0 to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds.

The power plant was subject to a recall issued by Hyundai Motor America earlier this year.

The recall targeted 28,439 full-size G90, mid-size G80, and sportier G70 vehicles assembled in South Korea between June 2016 and September 2021.
