There's plenty of choice, so make sure you're picking out the one which is best for you.

Skoda Fabia vRS

Skoda have claimed that the model can get from zero to 62mph in under 9.5 seconds.

However, more recent road tests have revealed it could achieve that feat in even less time.

Motorists can snag the car for £1,990 if they opt for one with around 150,000 miles on the clock.

Fiat Panda 100hp

The cheap and cheerful Fiat Panda 100hp was in circulation between 2006 and 2010.

It can reach speeds of 60mph in 9.5 seconds and can hit a top speed of 115mph.

The gearbox is easy to use and the steering is relatively quick. It weighs under a thousand kilos, boasts six gears, 100bhp and stores a 1.4 litre engine.

If you're lucky, it can be yours for £1,995.

Suzuki Swift Sport

This bantamweight bruiser weighs just 975kg and its power comes from a 140hp 1.4-litre Boosterjet turbo petrol.

Everything is standard, including adaptive cruise control, touchscreen satnav, reversing camera, lane keep assist, sport seats, Apple CarPlay, 17in alloys, twin exhausts and carbon fibre-style trim.

Toyota Yaris T-Sport

This sleek motor adds sports performance to the many enjoyable characteristics of the European Car Of The Year 2000 Yaris range.

It features a powerful 1.5-litre VVT-i engine, a dynamic look, lowered suspension and unique sports-style interior.

It accelerates from 0-62mph in just 9.0 seconds and has a top speed, where permitted, of 118mph.

Well-used models can be found for as little as £1,395.

Alfa Romeo Mito TB 155

The Mito TB 155 is an Italian masterpiece.

There are three power options with the 1.4-litre petrol, but you want the 155bhp — to get anywhere near enjoying the car’s handling abilities.

It delivers 0-62mph in eight seconds, ups the top speed to 134mph and it gets closer to sounding as good as an Alfa should, while still producing a decent 43.5mpg.
