For the first time ever, Europe's most popular new car doesn't have a combustion engine.

The Tesla Model Y has been named the continent's best seller in 2023, with over a quarter of a million entering European roads last year, figures show.

(Europe's best-selling car is electric: More examples of the Tesla Model Y were registered on the continent than any petrol of diesel car)

(Figures show that 254,822 Model Y SUVs were registered across the EU last year - an 85% increase on 2022 sales)

It shows that 254,822 Model Y SUVs were registered across the EU last year - an 85 per cent increase on 2022 sales (137,608).

The bumper year for Model Y sales has been attributed to the US company's decision at the beginning of 2023 to slash prices by up to £9,000 across Europe and other global markets.

The Y's leap to the top of Europe's registration charts was also bolstered by the fact it was the best seller in the continent's biggest market, Germany.

45,618 registrations in Germany in total.
