A surreal situation was experienced by a couple of Mossos d'Esquadra officers in Cervera when a driver, a 70-year-old beekeeper, attacked them by releasing the bees he had in the back of his van because they wanted to report him for driving without a seat belt and refusing to submit to a breathalyzer test, as this newspaper has learned. The driver was arrested as the alleged perpetrator of a crime of assault on authority and the officers had to be treated for the stings at the CAP, where they were given cortisone.

The events took place on Friday last week at 1:00 p.m., when a patrol was carrying out a check on the N-II in the interior of the capital of Segarra and stopped the driver of a van because he was not wearing a seat belt. “I should have run you over,” the driver allegedly told the officers, who suspected he might be under the influence of alcohol. They asked him to take a test and the first test showed a result of 0.38 mg/l, according to reliable sources. However, he refused to take a second reading and began to threaten them. “Now I’m going to kill you,” he allegedly shouted at them. It was then that he went to the back of the vehicle, opened the door and bees began to come out, which stung the officers. The police had to take shelter and were even helped by people in a nearby restaurant. A reinforcement patrol also arrived.

Finally, the driver was arrested for a crime of attack and was released on bail hours later after giving a statement at the police station, while the police officers had to be treated at the CAP, where they were given cortisone for the bites. Reliable sources explain that the offender was judicially acquitted this week of the crime of attack, although this newspaper has not been able to confirm this.

More than 300 Mossos and other police officers gathered on May 5 in front of the first police station in Lleida to denounce the increase in attacks they suffer – which they say go unpunished –, demand more protection and show their discontent with the leadership of the police and the Interior Ministry. The trigger was the brutal attack on six ARRO officers in Mariola. They stated that in 2024 there were 2,550 attacks on officers and that this January alone there had been 223.
