New Tesla Model Y “Juniper” received 50,000 orders on launch day in China, source says

On January 10, when the new Tesla Model Y “Juniper” was launched in China, 50,000 orders were placed that day, according to a Chinese auto blogger 长三角行健者. 

Additionally, a Tesla China salesperson said his store received nearly 300 orders on the 10th. 

This is consistent with another reveal from the Chinese auto blogger 胖虎 Shawn that the number of orders at a single store exceeded 100 units. Tesla operates over 300 stores in China.

According to the Tesla China store salesperson, even if a consumer pays the intention deposit now and queue up, he/she will still have to wait until April or May to pick up the car.

长三角行健者 is a Weibo-certified auto blogger with 121,000 followers. On December 31, 2024, he shared online that the new Tesla Model Y is expected to be launched in January 2025, with a direct source from a Tesla salesperson.

Two trims of the new Tesla Model Y were launched: RWD and long-range AWD, priced at 263,500 yuan (35,950 USD) and 303,500 yuan (41,400 USD), respectively. 

Tesla China announced that the official delivery is expected to start in March. 

On January 10, Tesla China’s Weibo launch post exceeded 100,000 reads in just five minutes after posting.

A Tesla salesperson also revealed to Chinese media that the number of orders on that day “exploded”. Although the old Tesla Model Y had a certain price discount, there were still more customers who chose the new Tesla Model Y.

Furthermore, on Weibo, the phrase “New Model Y, despite the comparison” quickly topped the hot search list after the new model was released. Lei Jun, the founder of Xiaomi, also responded to this on Weibo with an “OK” and tagged the Xiaomi YU7.

Tesla delivered 480,309 Model Ys in China in 2024, up 5% from 2023. 76,380 units were exported, down 54% from 2023.
